„Cities of the Future“

Have you ever considered the future of cities and how we can solve the upcoming challenges that arise in urban areas? In our English major class with Ms. Henrich, we deeply delved into these questions. Divided into groups of four, we designed a future city model based on the expected issues of urbanization. In the following paragraphs, we will briefly summarize and depict the results of our work.

 

During the design process, we noticed that several aspects of our future city models overlapped. Therefore, we will first list the fundamental changes we proposed for this project.  

One of the primary improvements included focusing on green spaces, such as providing more parks and larger green areas. Additionally, we aimed to support environmentally friendly mobility by improving bicycle infrastructure and making public transport more attractive to citizens. We also aimed to make the city car-free to reduce further environmental damage. Lastly, all groups saw the need to switch to renewable energy sources. 

 Some of the ideas elaborated by the students were:  

  • Sustainable skyscrapers that utilize less space 
  • Hydropower turbines 
  • Supporting regional and seasonal produce 
  • Dividing the city into outer living spaces and a central working/socializing space 
  • Connecting living and working districts through modern high-speed trains 
  • Prioritizing recycling systems 
  • Circle-City system with a checkered layout 
  • Meat, dairy, and waste taxes 
  • Different types of housing for various incomes 
  • Gardens on rooftops and walls 
  • Circle-City with alternating circular layers 
  • The city is divided into four quarters, each containing all the living necessities such as supermarkets and schools 
  • Sky-Train systems with bicycle lanes beneath them 

Although many of the ideas, particularly those concerning climate change, were very similar, each perspective had its unique twist. During the design process, we came to realize that this issue is highly complex and that creating realistic models necessitates profound knowledge in multiple fields. Reflecting on this topic is crucial since it is our responsibility to preserve this planet for future generations.
